How to Backup WordPress Website without FTP Access?

Why UpdraftPlus?

UpdraftPlus free version have a lot of features. It is more than enough for complete website backup compare to other backup plugins. Besides, it offers scheduled backups and the widest range of remote storage options. The website backup and restore process is pretty quick and easy.

Steps:

Open your WordPress dashboard.
Go to Plugins > Add New, search for ‘UpdraftPlus’.
Install and activate the plugin.


Then, go to Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups.


Go to Settings tab, choose file backup intervals (manual, every 2, 4, 8 ,12 hours, daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly) and set a number to retain the backups.


Select one from the 16 remote storage destination options to prevent backup remain on same server as website. For UpdraftPlus Vault, you need at least a premium plan. If you did not choose any remote storage, the backup will remain on your own server. For this article, I will choose Google Drive option.


Choose the files you want to include in backup. Recommend to leave 4 checked.


Click ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom after you had done your selection.

Authenticate Google Drive account

A popup window appear, click on the link to authenticate your Google Drive account.


Choose Google Account you are going to use.


Next, read the policy and allow UpdraftPlus to access your Google Account.


Click ‘Complete setup’ to complete the setup process.


The green reminder bar confirm that you had authenticate your Google Drive account. The account connected showing the quota usage.

Backup WordPress Website

Go back to Backup / Restore tab and click ‘Backup Now’ button.


Check the box(es) in popup window and click ‘Backup Now’.


The backup process start and running.


After some time (depends on how big your website backup file), the backup process is completed. Scroll down the page to check for existing backups.


Go to your linked Google Drive account to check if the backup worked. The default folder name is UpdraftPlus. Therefore, if this folder exist, you had successfully backup your website to Google Drive.
